Read this book. Read it again, and again. I do. It's a great way to kick off your year with the mindset to embrace everything the year ahead holds.

Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, MD

Take swing. At least step up to the plate. Have you even grabbed the bat? I can be a bit of a perfectionist and sometimes this leads to analysis paralysis. But you're never going to hit a home run (or even just get on base) by analyzing what it takes. You have to commit to putting yourself out there. Commit, at least to some extent, to learning trial and error. Learning from feedback, reflection, and taking swing after swing. It feels good when you connect, and it sucks when you strike out... and that makes taking a swing (and every step leading up to it) scary as hell. But that impact never happens unless you take a swing. I'm taking a swing this year, and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.

Personal

My kids like to pretend I'm monkey bars sometimes (ok, well more than sometimes). They like to do this back-flip move in which they hold my hands, climb up my legs and torso, then I help them into a back flip. My oldest is pretty good at this little move, but the others have a hesitance going upside down and leaning into the flip. The other day, my oldest started talking to her younger sister about overcoming her fear with courage. She pulled it off. Proud dad moment.

I'm learning: Check out this post from Adam Grant that so succinctly sums up how we so often view change, initiative, and trying something new:

What holds many people back from taking initiative is not laziness. It's fear. Some ideas won't work. Some people will say no. Bu...

Professional

I see and hear so many conversations these days about how terrible the state of healthcare is. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, maybe I'm just biased about my colleagues, but I think most of the comments in the medical community is coming from a good place. A place of service. I think the vast majority of physicians (and healthcare professionals at large) want the best for patients and to improve the health of humanity. The intent just often gets lost in the messaging. Change is hard. Change is scary. The very thought of change can sometimes be crippling. We need to look past our perception of messaging and really get down to the intent of all stakeholders driving improvement. That's what will bring us together for meaningful change.

I'm learning: The book Speed of Trust is a helpful guide in this area.

I'm sharing: Read how healthcare is human.

Impact

I have ambitious goals for this year, and I'm excited about my potential impact this year despite a whole lot of uncertainty in the world (and in my little piece of it). I want to double my financial contribution this year to the things that are important to my family, and more directly track my societal impact. You'll learn more soon enough about these areas. In the interim, I hope you find the following helpful:

I'm learning: I learn a lot from music. This song has been on my mind lately. It's a timely title and I think it hints at relection, hope, and moving forward.

I'm sharing: Impact and contribution is driven in part by our feeling of belonging. This article discusses why I belong.
