Read this book. Read it again, and again. I do. It's a great way to kick off your year with the mindset to embrace everything the year ahead holds.

Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, MD

Last year I took a swing. I stepped up to the plate, let it rip... swing and a miss. I threw myself out there with big plans, and this newsletter was one of them. What seemed like a well laid plan, quickly felt overwhelming, bogged down in technicalities, and more of a burden than impact opportunity. I hit the pause button after only one month and went back to the drawing board... but not completely from scratch. I just swung before I was really mentally ready. Before I was confident. Before I was committed. Before I really trusted myself. This isn't going to be perfect, but cheers to taking another swing at building something special.

Personal

As an osteopathic physician, I try to practice what I preach by setting my personal goals in a wholistic view of health... you know: mind, body, and spirit.  When you're thin, it's harder for the outside world to notice health gains. For me, there's no obvious external manifestation of high cholesterol, or inflammation, or mismatched proportion of lean mass to visceral/body fat. I'm not going to drop pant sizes by getting healthier. For the most part, I have to 'win' through alternative data points. Data like labs, imaging, strength gains, advanced metrics. But what's my biggest health flex of 2025? Reaching beyond my toes on that hamstring stretch. That's right... because flexibility is what's preventing the injuries that kept me from even trying for so long. 6 years and counting without my back 'going out'.

I'm learning: There's so much to digest about health in Peter Attia's book Outlive (even for physicians) that I'm reading/listening to it again.

I'm sharing: My go to stretch workout is part of this program. Less than 10 minutes each night before bed keeps me feeling better and better.

Professional

About six months ago I transitioned my work to mostly remote. My clinical time is still in the hospital, but everything else is remote work. There are things I'm loving about the change, yet some things were very unexpected. I'm don't really like the labels, but I'm probably an ambivert. I can geek out with a spreadsheet, but I crave the personal connection of knowing I made an impact. For anyone considering the transition to fully remote work, here are two things to consider before doing so. First, weigh the tradeoffs of flexibility with the the lost opportunity for personal relationships and the 'hug and handshake' culture of in-person work. Second, seek clarity about the nature of the work regardless of the setting. Remote work is not synonymous asynchronous, so understand exactly what you're seeking with the transition to remote.

I'm learning: If you're familiar with The Tipping Point, by Malcolm Gladwell, be sure to check out the sequel. I learned the darker side of the concepts.

I'm sharing: Something special of my own coming in May 2026! Learn more.

Impact

I am pretty ambitious with my impact goals every year, and this year is no different. I want to double my philathropic contributions this year and I'll be sharing more along the way about how I want to get there. Beyond financial contributions, I'm excited to take on the role of President-elect of the American Osteopathic Foundation this year, and I look forward to helping advance the organizations mission through that service.

I'm learning: Impact is hard to measure, which makes it hard to track, which makes it hard to get a satisfying feeling. One of the most fulfilling moments for me last year came when I was presented a plaque from the alumni of the Baptist North Mississippi Internal Medicine Residency.

I'm sharing: Last year I shared an article about why I belong to different organizations and it seemed to resonate, so I'm sharing again.
